A thermostatic radiator valve, usually called a TRV, gives you a practical way to manage the heat from an individual radiator. Set the room-temperature band you want, then let the valve respond as the room warms and cools. It is a useful upgrade when you want more control from room to room, without constantly adjusting every radiator by hand.

What is a thermostatic radiator valve?
A TRV has two working parts. The valve body regulates the flow of hot water through one radiator. The thermostatic head senses the air around it and acts on the valve as that air becomes warmer or cooler than the level you have selected.
In simple terms, it helps the radiator ease back once the room has warmed up and allow more heat through as the room cools. A TRV controls that one radiator. It does not directly switch the boiler on or off, so it works alongside your main heating controls.
What the TRV dial means
The numbers on a TRV are not radiator-temperature settings. They are a rough guide to the room-air temperature band the valve is trying to maintain. Turning the dial higher does not make a cold room heat up faster. It simply selects a warmer target band.

Those figures are a useful rule of thumb, not an exact promise. The scale and the temperature reached can vary slightly between manufacturers and with the way the valve is installed. If your valve has a 0 position, check its instructions for what that setting does.
Why choose thermostatic control?
Rooms are used differently. You may want a warmer living area, a cooler bedroom or less heat in a spare room that is rarely occupied. A TRV lets you set a room-by-room preference instead of relying on the same hand-adjusted radiator setting throughout the house.
It is also useful when a room gains heat from sunlight, cooking or everyday activity. As the air around the head warms, the valve can reduce the flow through that radiator rather than continuing to deliver the same amount of heat.
Can TRVs help reduce heating costs?
They can help when they prevent rooms from receiving more heat than they need. Once a room reaches the band selected on the dial, the TRV can reduce hot-water flow through that radiator. That means less heat is delivered there and the heating system may need to supply less energy to the circulating water.
Used sensibly, this can reduce boiler fuel use, heating costs and associated environmental impact. The result depends on the property, the wider heating controls, the system and the temperatures you choose, so it is better to see it as a useful opportunity rather than a fixed saving.
Do you need TRVs on every radiator?
Not necessarily. Start with how each room is used, the control you want and the heating controls already in place. A TRV can be a good fit where local temperature-responsive control would be useful, but it is not automatically the right answer for every radiator, room or system.
It also needs the right conditions to read the room properly. The head should have freely circulating air around it. Thick curtains, furniture, radiator covers, recesses and nearby hot pipework can affect what it senses.
Thermostatic versus manual radiator valves
A manual radiator valve is adjusted directly by hand. A TRV responds to the temperature around its head after you select the room-temperature band. Neither choice is universally better. The right one depends on the level of local control you want and the product that suits the installation.

Checks before choosing a TRV
Choosing thermostatic control is only the first step. Before buying, confirm the valve-body pattern, pipe route, radiator connection, available clearance, specified pipe or thread details, flow direction and the manufacturer’s requirements for the product you are considering. Do not assume every TRV has the same fitting, orientation, reverse-flow capability, presetting or remote-sensing option.
Changing your radiator valve to a TRV
Changing a valve on a wet heating system can involve isolating, draining, refilling and commissioning part of the system.
