If your shower feels weak, a quick flow-rate test gives you a useful starting point. It shows how much water the outlet delivers naturally, before any pump is fitted, and helps you decide whether the issue is negative head or simply low flow that may benefit from a suitable shower pump.
You only need a known-volume container, a timer and a few minutes. Test the outlet you want to improve, then use the result to follow the right pump-selection path.
Why measure shower flow?
The test answers two practical questions. First, does the outlet have enough natural flow for a positive-head pump to activate? Second, is the existing flow likely to give you the shower experience you want?
Keep those questions separate. A flow rate that is high enough for a particular pump to activate may still be lower than you would like at the shower. Measuring first means you can investigate the right solution instead of choosing a pump based on guesswork.
What you need
- A measuring jug, marked bucket or another container with a known volume.
- A stopwatch, phone timer or watch with a seconds display.
- A note of which outlet and supply you are testing: hot, cold or mixed.
Keep the container stable, manage splashing and use a safe water temperature. Avoid running other taps, showers or appliances that use water while you test, as they can affect the result.
Run the timed-volume test
If a pump is already fitted, switch it off before testing. Open the selected outlet fully as you would normally use it, collect water in the container and time how long it takes to reach a known volume.
Record the result and repeat the test for every hot, cold and mixed path that a proposed pump would serve. The reading applies only to the outlet and supply you have tested.
Calculate litres per minute
Divide the litres collected by the number of seconds taken, then multiply the result by 60.
For example, collecting 5 litres in 30 seconds gives 10 L/min: 5 ÷ 30 × 60 = 10.
Repeat the test if the result seems inconsistent. A reliable measurement is more useful than a single rushed reading.
Interpret your result

- Around 6 L/min or above: this is at or above PlumbHQ’s practical comfort benchmark, so a pump is not automatically required.
The Environment Agency describes standard showers at 10–15 L/min and lower-flow showers at around 6 L/min in its water-efficiency guidance. These figures give useful context for comparing shower flow. They are not pump-activation rules or a guarantee of how a shower will feel for every user.

Choose the correct pump path
Below 2 L/min points towards a compatible universal negative-head pump because a positive-head pump may not activate. From 2 to below 6 L/min, a positive-head or universal model may be appropriate, depending on the complete water system and the exact model’s criteria.
Flow alone does not confirm that a pump is suitable. Check the system type, the outlets to be served and the current manufacturer instructions before choosing a model.
Test each outlet separately
One reading does not describe every bathroom or outlet in the property. Pipework routes, outlet heights and restrictions can differ, and so can the hot, cold and mixed supplies. Test each path that the proposed pump would serve before making a selection.
